What is May Day 2023 and why?

May Day 2023, also known as International Workers’ Day, is a holiday celebrated on May 1 every year. It is a day dedicated to celebrating labor and the achievements of the international labor movement.

May Day has its roots in the struggle for workers’ rights in the late 19th century. In 1886, labor workers in the United States organized a nationwide strike to demand an eight-hour workday. The strike escalated into a rally in Chicago’s Haymarket Square, where a bomb exploded, killing several people.

In response to this incident, the International Socialist Congress in Paris declared May 1 as International Workers’ Day in 1889. The purpose of the holiday was to commemorate the struggle for workers’ rights and to promote the international labor movement.

Today, May Day is celebrated by labor unions, workers and activists around the world with rallies, parades and other public demonstrations. It is a day to celebrate the achievements of the labor movement as well as draw attention to the ongoing struggle for workers’ rights and social justice.

History of May Day

During this time all the workers had to work for about 16 hours a day in unsanitary conditions. Over this issue, on May 1, 1886, thousands of workers in the United States called a nationwide strike to demand an eight-hour work day. There was a huge protest of the workers in the Hay Market in the American city of Chicago.

The police opened fire there to stop the agitating workers. Several workers lost their lives and many were injured in police firing that day. Many were also arrested and many of them were hanged.

However, after all this, the government was forced to accept the demands of the workers in the face of intense agitation. Then in 1889, in the Second International Labor Conference held in Paris, it was decided to celebrate May Day as May Day. Which is known as Labor Day.

According to history it is known that the demand of the workers i.e. the demand of working eight hours a day, was not fulfilled in one day. In reality it took years and many lives were lost in protest, much blood was spilled, not only in the United States, but also in Germany, England and France.
