History of May Day

During this time all the workers had to work for about 16 hours a day in unsanitary conditions. Over this issue, on May 1, 1886, thousands of workers in the United States called a nationwide strike to demand an eight-hour work day. There was a huge protest of the workers in the Hay Market in the American city of Chicago.

The police opened fire there to stop the agitating workers. Several workers lost their lives and many were injured in police firing that day. Many were also arrested and many of them were hanged.

However, after all this, the government was forced to accept the demands of the workers in the face of intense agitation. Then in 1889, in the Second International Labor Conference held in Paris, it was decided to celebrate May Day as May Day. Which is known as Labor Day.

According to history it is known that the demand of the workers i.e. the demand of working eight hours a day, was not fulfilled in one day. In reality it took years and many lives were lost in protest, much blood was spilled, not only in the United States, but also in Germany, England and France.
