NHL Draft Lottery 2024: Who Are The Winners?

The San Jose Sharks will select first overall in this summer’s NHL Draft in Las Vegas after winning the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery. The Boston University standout Macklin Celebrini will be the new franchise cornerstone that the Sharks acquire with that first overall pick.

With the worst record in the league going into the lottery, the Sharks had the best chance of being selected first. The second pick goes to the Blackhawks, who won the lottery last year and chose Connor Bedard first overall. And third will be selected by the Anaheim Ducks.

The Sharks had 18.5% chance of winning the pick after finishing last overall. For the first time in the franchise’s history, they will choose first. Since no team advanced in the lottery, the Chicago Blackhawks, the lottery winners from the previous year, will receive the second pick.

Celebrini, 17, a 6-foot, 190-pound rookie center, led the Terriers to the Frozen Four, where they were defeated by eventual champion Denver in the semifinals, with 32 goals and 32 assists in 38 games. He was chosen as Hockey East’s best player and rookie, and he also received the Hobey Baker Award as the best men’s college hockey player.

A chance to win the top pick and a chance to win the second pick are given out in the first two drawings. Only ten spots can be advanced by winning teams. The team in last place can select a player no later than third overall. After the 2022 lottery, a team is only allowed to win twice in a five-year span.

Each team is given a set of four numbers, and the machine holds 14 ping-pong balls. A team receives a greater series of numbers the lower it is in the standings. The Sharks emerged victorious with the combination 2-7-10-11, while the Blackhawks secured the second pick with 3-6-11-14.

NHL Draft Lottery Odds:

Who gets the first selection on draft day is decided by a lottery system used by the NHL. The opportunity for a club to secure the top pick in the draft lottery is correlated with its standings finish.

In a draft, there are only 11 teams that can potentially select first overall because teams can only move up by 10 spots. In the event that they win the lottery, teams that placed 12–16 can advance to the top, but only by a maximum of 10 spots.

The Sharks have the best chance of selecting the first pick in the draft because they had the worst record in the NHL at the end of the season. Even though San Jose’s finish gives them just an 18.5% chance, the Sharks still receive the first pick if any of the teams ranked Nos. 12–16 win the lottery. Thus, their actual percentage is 25.5%.
